According to McNeill et al. (2006: 161), Coscinodiscus argus Ehrenb. is the conserved type of the name of the genus Coscinodiscus Ehrenb. in Abh. Königl. Akad. Wiss. Berlin, Phys. Abh., 1838: 128. 1839. Thus the lectotype specimen "BHUPM K11 B5 5e bl" by Hasle & Sims (1986) typifies the genus. (AlgaTerra 2009-01-02)
