AlgaTerra

An information system for micro algal biodiversity:
a synthesis of taxonomic, molecular and ecological information

AlgaTerra is a relational database, based on the Berlin Taxomic Information Model. AlgaTerra contains micro algal names, names relations, names concepts, types, pictures, videos, morphological information, taxonomical information, ecological information, and molecular information. AlgaTerra is available on the Internet at no charge.

AlgaTerra was financed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to build up an information infrastructure for phycological research in Germany. AlgaTerra  is maintained by the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum, Berlin-Dahlem, Freie Universität Berlin.

The AlgaTerra mission is to provide referenced data for fundamental research, applied research, teaching, and the public.

Standards used by AlgaTerra

Algal names: correctable errors are corrected according to the rules of the ICBN (Greuter & al. 2000) respectively McNeill & al. (2006).

Author names: TDWG standard (Authors are abbreviated according to Brummitt & Powell 1992 respectively the IPNI database. Author names, missing in these sources are abbreviated according to the standard and submitted to IPNI).

Books: TDWG standard (Books are abbreviated according to TL2, if possible).

Dates: no standard is used, where possible AlgaTerra uses the format: DD Month YYYY.

Geography: TDWG standard (types, ecological information, abstracts searchable via TDWG categories).

Journals: TDWG standard (Journals are abbreviated according to BPH).

Types section: in this section AlgaTerra includes original material, in some cases the term "iconotype" is mentioned if the icon of a preparation is meant, if "iconotype" has the meaning of "type, that is a icon" it is given as a holotype.

FAQs

Does AlgaTerra focus on terrestrial algae only?

No, the main focus of AlgaTerra is on benthic and planctonic micro algae of limnic and brackish/marine habitats.

Why the algal pictures  are not available through Google?

AlgaTerra is a fully referenced database and no simple picture gallery; please go to the "Picture" section in AlgaTerra.

Does AlgaTerra have information on seaweeds?

No, please check AlgaeBase, they very are experienced with information on macro algae.

There is Index Nominum Algarum by Paul Silva on the Internet, covering 200.000 algal names and some types information, why AlgaTerra provides names, too?

AlgaTerra needs algal names as a backbone, the difference to all other existing algal databases is, that the AlgaTerra database is concept orientated to store factual information of different sources.

Why are some datasets in AlgaTerra different from those of other databases?

Because every database contains errors and/or different interpretations of original data. It is difficult and time consuming to find errors. Please let us know when you find them.
